And that's not even close.

I'll add in Jonah Lomu.
And Leigh Matthews, Peter Hudson, Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton (the last... kinda).

Re: Who Is The Most Dominant Athlete To Ever Live?

Dominance is a factor of the competition the athlete competes against. To dominate, you have to be that much better than your competitors.

Wilt was that dominant in his era. More than Jordan was in his era I would say.

This is a different argument to who is better...

I would definitely include Grant Hackett and Ian Thorpe in this conversation, as well as Phelps.

However I think (with a hint of current situation bias) that Usain Bolt takes the cake in terms of domiance. He is that far ahead of the pack in terms of how much he is breaking records by.

Oh and just a reminder for those with short memories, here are Thorpe, Phelps, van den Hoogenband and Hackett (not his distance) in the same race.

Not sure about the swimmers (Spitz, Jim Thorpe, etc.) they all amount to masses of olympic golds for essentially the same stuff (8 gold medals in one olympics? cmon). They all retire in their mid-twenties with so many medals, its not even funny. Rarely you see old athlets here.

Bolt is getting up there no doubt if he continues to dominate

Jim Thorpe wasn't a swimmer, but he is up there in terms of most dominant athletes to ever live.

Guys like Jim Brown, Byron Nelson, and Arvydas Sabonis also merit a mention.

As much as I like Lance Armstrong his dominance was mostly related to one event (the Tour De France).

If Lou Gehrig hadn't come along, Babe Ruth is a lock. He was out slugging whole teams.

Pat led the passing with 7 assists, and his usual steady defensive play held the opposing first squad to no double-digit point getters. He was heard running down the court screaming "If I can't score, you won't either!"

There's a 50% chance of getting either live or die. Obviously you're more likely to die, but if there are two options there is a 50% chance of getting either. -SH

There's an Aussie wood chopper from Tasmania who was a 168 time world champion over a span of like 30 years. Apparently that's a sport...

Haven't read the rest of the thread. Don't need to.

1) Walter Lindrum.
2) Don Bradman.

/thread.

No Aussie bias here whatsoever.

It has to be Lindrum if you count billiards/pool as a sport. They had to change the rules to stop him from winning everything. And he STILL won everything. What other sportsperson can you say that about?

Don Bradman - find me another guy who is half as good again statistically as any other player. Bradman averaged 99.94 runs at the highest level of cricket. The next highest players are in the 60s. That's like having a basketballer average 40-45 PPG for their ENTIRE career.

It's Don Bradman because no. Billiards is not a sport. Neither is pool, deep-sea diving, extreme lawn mowing, poker, wood chopping, or fire breathing.

As for comparing Bradman's career batting average to a basketballer's career PPG average.... I'd say the Don's was the equivalent to a basketballer averaging 65-70 ppg over the span of a career.

Re: Who Is The Most Dominant Athlete To Ever Live?

65-70 ppg doesn't equal 100 test runs.

How many players have surpassed 60 points in a single game in the NBA, as compared to how many players have scored 100, or even 200 runs in test cricket?

Wha?

We're talking about an AVERAGE over the span of a CAREER here...

Re: Who Is The Most Dominant Athlete To Ever Live?

I can't believe I forgot about Don Bradman. He definitely deserves to be right near the top of the heap.

Funny thing with Federer... he was VERY dominant for a long time there. But he's still in his prime, yet not as dominant any more. What does that mean in the context of this discussion?

Re: Who Is The Most Dominant Athlete To Ever Live?

I think Moose was joking..in case some didn't get it.

And Raj, you could've stopped your statement after the whole MJ is better than Kobe part, cause you kinda look stupid calling Kobe "not even that good".

Now moving on, Sabonis is total win MNFL, you know how I feel about him smile
