Aliens

Do you believe in them? Do you think they are real?

Could we get a discussion going on this as I am very interested in reading some of the answers

Re: Aliens

Yes, but I don't believe anyone has come in contact with one.

Pat led the passing with 7 assists, and his usual steady defensive play held the opposing first squad to no double-digit point getters. He was heard running down the court screaming "If I can't score, you won't either!"

There's a 50% chance of getting either live or die. Obviously you're more likely to die, but if there are two options there is a 50% chance of getting either. -SH

I think there's other normal people out there, just like us.

But not like, weird green creatures who make freaky noises. No.

I'm not sure they would be the same as us. Who knows how physics can change biological composition in different compositions?

Re: Aliens

Even if they do evolve in the same way, if the biological composition is the same, evolution might take a different course.

Re: Aliens

Meh, if aliens do exist it is prolly as some microscopic organism that has adapted to absolutely inhospitale conditions.

There's definitely (mathematically speaking) some planet that's been around as long as the Earth, and has liveable conditions.

Yeah, Uranus.

Seriously, I can't believe it took this long for a Uranus joke to appear in this sort of thread.

Anywho, continue. Please.

Ugh, I always knew this thread was a bad idea...its just going to dissolve into a brief discussion about the infinite monkey infinite type-writer theory without having any great relevance to anybody or anything.

Re: Aliens

To believe that no other form of life exists anywhere in our universe is plain ignorance IMO.

Maybe there's even a form of life that we wouldn't classify as "life", we don't know everything, heck, we haven't even explored all of our oceans!

Re: Aliens

What ive always questioned is ...

Doesn't it mean if they find water on the moon, then the moon is sustainable to the form of life in which we are.

Can't there be other forms of life that don't need H20? I mean, we are just looking for life forms such as ours. Couldnt there possibly be other who differently categorized species opposite of what the life forms we have today need?

As far as i know there is no scientific explanation how life started anyway. Too many unsolved variables to abstract from our planet to alien lifeforms. I agree.

But even if we constraint to other planets somewhat similar to ours we still look at a infinitely large number.

Well apart from the lack of oxygen there and the extreme temperature shifts, yes it could sustain life.

But honestly. I want to see somebody watch that gif and then confidently support a claim that we are alone.

Re: Aliens

Yes that gif is what my exact answer to this question would be.  Just based on the scale of the universe and probability, conditions that support life quite like our own probably exist.  Conditions that could support different types of life definitely exist.  It might not be "intelligent" or whatever though.

There's a 50% chance of getting either live or die. Obviously you're more likely to die, but if there are two options there is a 50% chance of getting either. -SH

Re: Aliens

It is a mathematical impossibility that there ISN'T other forms of life out there.  According to the accepted definition of "intelligent life" there are actually two species on Earth that qualify, humans and dolphins.  Two on one planet, literally trillions^trillion power stars out there...

Re: Aliens

Since when has statistics been maths? Besides, the probability of something is never 1 or 0, so to call it a mathematical impossibility is a ridiculous comment anyway.

I'm not saying aliens don't exist, but I think that just making some variables infinitely large to come to a 'foregone conclusion' is a rather silly way to think about life...

Re: Aliens

But that is just it, life is a foregone conclusion based on the infinite nature of what we are talking about.  Most of us have been conditioned to think that humans are inherently special, when the truth might be far less appealing.
