Re: Hannibal's Weekly(ish) Top Ten--Season 16 Version

17 games into the season and the picture is clarifying about who are the top dogs and who are the runts.

#1) SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS (17-0) (Last Week: 1): On one hand, I love SFYL's willingness to take all comers; on the other hand, I want to see how they would fare against a week of nothing by Pro A top-ten teams.  Given their form at this moment, I'm not sure if it would make a lot of difference.  Once again, three blow-out wins against top ten teams, as well as mopping up the rest.  Hard to find many faults when there aren't any in their record.

#2) Ballin for Dummies (14-3) (Last Week: 4): B4D has done their best to keep pace with SFYL.  With a perfect week and four wins against top ten opponents, I think we've done pretty well.  However, unlike last year when B4D couldn't seem to escape playing top 5 teams, this year we've only had 2 games (1-1).  Until we match up against these teams more often, we won't truly know if we deserve a one-seed.

#3) Original Pilipino Music (15-2) (Last Week: 6): What a week for Original Pilipino Music!  Like their predecessors on this list, OPM had a perfect week.  Like B4D, they had 4 wins against top ten teams.  And, while they sport a better record than B4D, OPM is 8 rating points behind them in Kaz's rating system.  So, much as like the playoff standings, OPM is just a whisker behind B4D here...but I wouldn't bet on that always being the case.

#4) The Day Dreamers (11-6) (Last Week: 2): TDD was Jekyll and Hyde this week.  After rattling off 4 straight wins against top ten teams, TDD went on a three game skid, including one loss to a team outside of our top ten.  TDD is hoping that the remainder of Easter week brings about a resurrection of their hopes of being a one-seed and a return to their winning ways.

#5) The Beautiful South (11-6) (Last Week:  7):  Well, there can be no criticizing of The Beautiful South's strength of schedule this week.  tBS played six games against the top ten and held their own (2-4).  While this list appreciates a challenging schedule, we appreciate quality wins more.  To hold onto a spot in the top half of this list, tBS will have to at least break even against its top ten brethren; otherwise, the all too familiar ranking fade could repeat itself this year.

#6) Wagga Wagga Wombat Collective (11-6) (Last Week: NR/Best of the Rest #12): Last week, I stated that should a top ten team falter I would expect to see WWWC move into that spot.  Unfortunately for me, the team that faltered was Eggsistential Crisis.  However, one man's failings is another's triumph.  WWWC met the challenge of five games against the top ten by going 2-3.  With this team establishing itself in Pro A, the top Bird teams should be on guard for some Wombat Combat.

http://ericthewombat.org/Ericthewombat/Webpages/Images/combat%20wombat.jpg

#7) Animal Farm (10-7) (Last Week: 5): Animal Farm continued to eke out its top ten existence by plowing through a beefy schedule that included 4 games against the top ten (2-2) and a loss to the Last Out squad.  Animal Farm hopes to build on this success in future weeks, and bring the championship hens home to roost.

#8) Wizards extreme ballers (10-7) (Last Week: 10): Wizards extreme ballers proved this week that their early success was no illusion.  WEB not only added another top ten win (1-3) but also twice beat the Best of the Rest.  If WEB can show a bit more consistency against those who are above them on this list, it could end up being a magical season for them.

#9) Almost Nothing (8-9) (Last Week: 3): Almost Nothing had a grueling week in which almost nothing went right for them.  I mean, it isn't often that a team goes 1-6 for the week and doesn't fall out of the top ten.  However, each and every one of those games was against fellow top ten teams.  AN needs to have more success this week, because there is absolutely nothing that would keep them on the top ten if they have another 1-6 performance.

#10) Titans Forever (11-6) (Last Week: 8): Titans Forever had a very pedestrian week going 2-5, and showed nothing against top ten opponents (0-4).  But, TF find themselves in the middle of a wonderful paradox--if they were to drop from the top ten, it would actually strengthen their resume to be in the top ten.  How is this possible?...

The Last Out/Best of the Rest--1337 doom and EC: LEET had a solid week, embedded themselves in the Pro A ranks, and lodged their first top ten win.  However, 1337 doom lost to the best of the rest Eggsistential Crisis who also had a top ten win.  However, this win was against #10 TF who also beat EC twice this week.  So, if TF drops out, and 1337 doom enters, EC has a stronger resume then the h4xors.  If then we toss EC in the #10 spot, they are without a top ten win, and TF would have two wins against the top ten.  So, you see the paradox.  As such, 1337 doom and EC have settled into this purgatory.  Both teams are hoping to atone for their sins and earn their way into top ten paradise in future weeks.

Rounding out the top 20: #13) Windowlickers, #14) RotLW, #15) RKCH, #16) Venice Beach Streetball Club, #17) RKBB, #18) Nation of Domination, #19) Crunch Time,  #20) Point Whores

Four weeks left in the season, and only 25 games until the start of the playoffs.  Keep your eyes here to watch who are the lions and who are the lambs.

Anyone else feel demeaned and degreded when they're beaten by a team whose team name is entirely in capitals?

Re: Hannibal's Weekly(ish) Top Ten--Season 16 Version

A little late this week, but I'm starting this write-up before the end of the games today still....so maybe I'm on time...dunno.

#1) SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS (23-1) (Last Week: 1): SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS finally showed a small dent in its armour with a loss to Animal Farm.  However, this was another excellent week with four wins against top ten opponents.  Neither one win nor one loss defines a season, and SFYL's opus leaves no doubt of their continued dominance.

#2) Ballin for Dummies (20-4) (Last Week: 2): For the first time this season, Ballin for Dummies was able to keep pace with SFYL by putting up another solid 6-1 week.  After a weaker strength of schedule last week, B4D had five games against top ten opponents (4-1).  If all continues to go well, hopefully we can finally make some ground on SFYL next week.

#3) Wagga Wagga Wombat Collective (18-6) (Last Week: 6): All I can say about this week is: Wagga Wagga!  A perfect week including 6 wins against top ten teams.  While WWWC didn't have as quick of a start, more weeks like this could easily find WWWC on top of the heap.  It seems Bird Pro A wasn't ready for the wombat combat!

#4) Original Pilipino Music (19-5) (Last Week: 3): Original Pilipino Music keeps sounding sweet to me.  Another solid week against the top ten (3-3) with their losses only coming at the hand of those above them on this list.  OPM continues to show that they are worthy of a one-seed and will be a force to be reckoned with come the playoffs.

#5) Animal Farm (15-9) (Last Week:  7): Had Animal Farm only beat SFYL this week, they would've earned a spot on this list.  However, by amassing 4 other wins, AF has put themselves at the head of the peleton.  However, for AF to make up any ground on the leaders, they will have to have better success against other top ten teams (1-2 overall).

#6) Almost Nothing (13-11) (Last Week: 9): I tried to think of another pun on AN's game and came up with (almost) nothing.  Despite a record that leaves something to be desired, AN continues to assert themselves as contenders.  AN split their games against top ten opponents this week (2-2) en route to a five win session.  They may be to far out to hope for a one-seed, but they will likely be a dangerous two-seed for someone.

#7) Wizards extreme ballers (13-11) (Last Week: 8): Wizards Extreme Ballers keep inching their way up these rankings.  A workman-like 3-4 week (2-4 against the top ten) continues to show WEB's ability to hang with the best, but they need to start creeping above five hundred to give themselves more than a puncher's chance at the crown.

#8) Nation of Domination (15-9) (Last Week: NR): Nation of Domination began to live up to their name this week by solidifying themselves into a two-seed slot.  NoD also notched their first top ten win (1-3 overall) and posted a resume-building win against the Last Out.  Now solidly in Pro A, NoD will have every opportunity to truly make their name for themselves.

#9) The Beautiful South (15-9) (Last Week: 5): The Beautiful South didn't seem quite as stunning this week.  While a 4-3 record is nothing at which to sneeze, it does hurt that one of those losses was from outside the top ten (1-2 against the top ten).  But, despite the blemishes, tBS continues to be worth a look come playoff time.

#10) The Day Dreamers (12-12) (Last Week: 4): It seems that Hyde was the true identity of The Day Dreamers.  TDD continued their shocking losing ways with a dismal 1-6 week.  While all of those loses did come against top ten teams, there is little keeping TDD from slipping into another nightmarish finish to a season.

The Last Out/Best of the Rest--Titans Forever and RK Beer Barons: TF and RKBB have both showed promise but have yet to be able to solidify themselves in the Pro A ranks or in the top ten.  Both have quality wins this week and are poised for a potential break-out.  With the general weakness of the bottom half of the top ten vis-a-vis the top half, I wouldn't be surpised to see both in the top ten next week.

Rounding out the top 20: #13) VBSC, #14) Windowlickers, #15) RotLW, #16) RKCH, #17) Crunch Time, #18) EC, #19) 1337 doom,  #20) SBD

Next week is tax time here in the US, and it will be time for everyone to pay the piper.  All that glitters may not be gold, but it can't all not be either...
