Incest is a common misperception about us. We probably inbreed, and did in the past as much as any other state.

We get that reputation, because families tend to live in isolation, or in hollers, especially in Appalachia. We have a mistrust of outsiders(me included), and especially so over there. They tended to stick with their families, but not sexually. I assume that since people here are like that, they just made the generalization that there was inbreeding going on, when in fact, 99% of the time, it wasn't.

Same thing as Kentucky. Hollers my friend, hollers.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't live in a holler. I am a little different from the people in eastern Kentucky. I've got some good stories to tell, because my dad used to coach over there, and my grandma is from there.

Honestly? Because by the time most of the kids on this site were born it was no longer called Kentucky Fried Chicken, it was called KFC.  It hasn't been called anything else in years.  Someone let slip to the public that fried chicken could kill you over time and Kentuc...um...KFC decided that was bad for their image.

The belief of Kentucky's greater than average incest rate come from things like this...

http://thehumanmarvels.com/?p=121
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methemoglobinemia

Also, I'm guessing the initial response the OP was looking for was "derby."
