CTTF: The story of the "win button"

http://www.courtrivals.com/images/logos/5552.jpg

We have recently discovered that the candy black market is running rampant outside of Court Rivals and our expertise is desperately needed elsewhere. We've had a blast but its time to move on. On our way out we thought we'd leave a little record of our tales ...

Candy Trafficking Task Force Team Creation
~tsb5026 suggests we make a team for the new Jordan league
~I make a tentative post to gauge interest
~tmoney20 responded promptly and quite positively so I decided to bite the bullet and try my hand at captaining - http://www.courtrivals.com/forums/viewt … p?id=78654

Interest in the team turned out to be flat out ridiculous so the only fair way to build the team was to take the first 10 people. There was one exception however. Two of the first four people to express an interest were rebounders so when Hubbalicious became the fifth interested party we didnt have room for his 7ft rebounding center. Im not sure hell ever let me live that down.

Our inaugural roster looked like this ...

PG - William Wallace - Ball Handling - tmoney20
PG - James Caine - Leadership - SwaggerJ
SG - Chris Hansen - 3 Point Shooting - tsb5026
SG Officer Bates 3 Point Shooting - HanesOnU
SF - Larry Lobster - Shooting - Micek_5
SF Place Holder Shooting - Orkendark
PF - Mike Carey - Blocking - marv88harrison
C - Michael-Larry Jabbar - Defense - mystic
PF - Carlos Washington - Rebounding - Blowcaine
C - Snicker Doodle - Rebounding - Sirvini

(look familar? tongue)

So with the roster set the only thing left to do was to develop a team name. Hey Kid Want Some Candy was an instant presence in Jordan and with my total lack of creativity we rode the coattails of Cundiff and company. tsb5026, mystic, and I tossed some ideas around until we finally settled on something. I shot a PM to Cundiff to make sure he didn't mind an instant rivalry and Candy Trafficking Task Force hit the streets ...

Season by Season
Season 8: I was a pretty green captain at first which is where mystic came in. The whole team worked well together in developing ideas and mystic brought the big time captaining experience we needed to get going in the right direction. This season was highlighted by the start of our rivalry with HKWSC and our 7-game series with -PeTrOsArEbAcK-. Awards: Second Team - Place Holder. We played 3 solid teams in our first 4 playoff games and caught Cundiff off guard with a 3pt stack in the Final Four. We snagged the inaugural Jordan Championship win 119-99 over Rotoguru Phoenix and Officer Bates won Playoff MVP

Season 9: Very early on in the season Sirvini suggested a strategic training change which turned out to make the difference in Season 9 and make season 10 a cake walk. Also this season ... "Did someone order some charts?" I took my training progression thread to the next level with some over the top excel sheets that made managing a team and keeping training in line extremely easy. Awards: First Team - Larry Lobster and Michael-Larry Jabbar. The first ever Championship repeat finished with a 19 game win streak which was punctuated by our Championship win 104-102 over Guardians and Larry Lobster won Playoff MVP

Season 10: With our outstanding training regiment the previous season, our approach was locked in. Awards: First Team - Michael-Larry Jabbar, Second Team - Larry Lobster and Place Holder, All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar. The three game series a short time before the playoffs with Super Heroes in Training proved to be a great tuned up for the team. SVIT gave us a scare in the Sweet 16 but my co-captain, Sirvini, got the job done and he stepped his game up vs. MTT in the Elite 8. The second of two 35 point victories on the final day of Season 10 represented the completion of our three-peat with a final score of 138-103 over Super Heroes in Training and Chris Hansen won Playoff MVP

Season 11: Our perpetual success fostered considerable complacency in my captaining habits and the team suffered. Training progression monitoring was lax, team skill points weren't recorded, and I just generally stopped paying attention to many aspects of Jordan. Awards: First Team - Michael-Larry Jabbar, Second Team - Larry Lobster, All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar. Our road in the playoffs was pretty standard but closed with a Championship loss to Raiders of the Lost Panties 107-127, bbkaos! [/fist shaking]

Season 12: Some of the things we did in previous seasons forced us to mortgage the future which made this season pretty dreary. We finished with our worst record, 21-21 (even worse than our impending rat season), and we suffered an inevitable Elite 8 loss to Raiders of the Lost Panties 115-122, bbkaos! [/slightly less fist shaking]

Season 13: Gym Rat. The guys absolutely crushed the 'train' button this season and it was AWESOME to watch big_smile. Awards: All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar. I'm not sure how MLJ won an award this season but I enjoyed it tongue

Season 14: The result of our training the previous season was flat out ridiculous. I don't want to identify the specific games but we went without TSPs for the majority. Gauging our opponents through the season with an eye for the playoffs proved to be slightly troublesome due to our absurd training situation and despite attempting to tank a couple games we finished with our best record, 37-5. Awards: All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar and Snicker Doodle. We cruised through the first five rounds of the playoffs and punctuated that run with a strange 154-90 Final Four win over ASS. We entered the Finals a bit under prepared due to the imbalance in Jordan but escaped with a 115-106 Championship win over Raiders of the Lost Panties and Carlos Washington won Playoff MVP

Season 15: Our second go at a repeat wasn't quite as rewarding as Season 9. The regular season included two 6-game losing streaks and a total of 7 losses to ROTLP. Awards: All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar. Despite our struggles with ROTLP, CSB was the team I wanted to avoid. I was unsuccessful in that endeavor and we suffered a Final Four loss to Coral Springs Ballers 109-111, pat_mac05! [/eh, thats ok]

Season 16: One more run. We didn't start the season with the intention of making it our last but that prospect became more and more inevitable as the season progressed. This was the first and only season in which I did not track our training progression and TSPs were hit or miss. With about 10 days left we elected to collectively hang it up after one last run through the playoffs. Awards: All-D - Michael-Larry Jabbar. We breezed through the first five playoff games and were left with a matchup with our latest nemisis for our fifth ring. We gave them a couple new looks to improve on our 2 point loss from the previous season's Final Four game and combined with a misstep or two with TSPs by our opponent we grabbed a 125-87 Championship win over Coral Springs Ballers and Officer Bates won Playoff MVP

Rivalries
We have had some great rivalries, psedo-rivalries, and just generally fun matchups with many teams but there is one that I feel I should specifically mention...

Hey Kid Want Some Candy As the motivation for our team name, HKWSC will always be our number one rival. We always had great matchups and the game chats were spectacular. I really missed having these guys around the last couple seasons. Our team name really makes no sense without them tongue

Heres a little window into the glory days of our rivalry and somewhere in there you'll find the Task Force gameplan for HKWSC as seen below ...

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6171/gameplan.png

Our all time record in this series was 15-9 and 2-0 in the playoffs.

Interesting Notes
~Officer Bates won Playoff MVP in our first and last season
~mystic was only on the team for the first and last season
~Initially Wallace was supposed to be a ball handler but due to my obliviousness to potential chem pairings he had to switch to free throws to chem with the infamous leader, James Caine.
~Our logo was intended to be temporary
~micek_5 averaged 1.57 awards per season. Pretty sure no one can ever match that (especially with only 2 players)
~Caine, Wallace, and Carey are the only players on the team to never win an award
~Jabbar is only 67 steals behind Threat for the all-time Pro Steals lead. Jabbar played 6 fewer seasons tongue
~Jabbar is the all-time Pro Steals leader in Jordan by 112
~Despite having played more Pro Opponents than any other team, none of our players are in the top 30 in Turnovers
~We broke the Team Awards Section tongue

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3695/broketheteamawards.png

The Task Force Classroom
Theres plenty to be learned from our success but I'll just touch on a couple points

1) Monitor your team's training. I find excel is excellent (tongue) for this purpose. I could frequently tell users more about their training regiment than they could. If you are going for an unfamiliar strategy or have concerns about players going inactive, monitoring training progression is a great idea. Heres a little example from my collection ...

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/6264/cttfexample.png

2) Study your opponent. Taking notes on what a team does against you in one game can prove to be VERY beneficial for future games. Figuring out what your opponent wants to do before they do it is pretty fun big_smile. Heres an example of my TSP book for a season ...

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1885/tspexample.png
I didn't think it would be fair to actually post my notes so I blacked those out

3) Heres a little insight into our closing sim points and build courtesy of SwaggerJ ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/TheGame50/CTTFS16.jpg

The Precinct (CLOSED)
In the end we are the only team to three-peat and the only team to win four (let alone five) championships but in my opinion our greatest accomplishment is that we have had the same 10 players on the roster for the entire history of our team. Weve had users retire: mystic, HanesOnU, Orkendark, and micek_5. We added mutigers28 for a couple seasons and drew that mystic guy back out of retirement. The point though is that over the span of 9 seasons we have had the same 10 players being managed by only 11 users. This demonstrates how fortunate I have been to have great people (not users, people) on this team. I cant thank them enough for joining this team and dealing with my evolving captaining techniques. One for the road guys

http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/7626/piechartq.png

So, for mutigers28, HanesOnU, Orkendark, micek_5, Blowcaine, SwaggerJ, tmoney20, mystic, Sirvini, tsb5026, and myself, we'd like to thank everyone for making Jordan such a success and putting up with us for 9 seasons. Good luck smile

Re: CTTF: The story of the "win button"

Oh, and I did actually want to add a few things...

1) That snapshot of attributes and sim points was taken during the 4th quarter of the championship game vs CSB

2) Our build was pretty straightforward. The reason we won so much was due to marv's amazing scouting and game planning ability. That's pretty much it. We did what he asked us to do, and 5 championships later, we're all pretty happy with the results.

3) Another big reason for our success was the type of users involved with the team. As marv stated, we never once had to replace a player. Any user that left the team willingly left his player there and transferred it to someone else on the team or to a new user joining the team. That kind of selflessness makes for an awesome team. As a team we certainly didn't win many individual awards, but that wasn't really important to us (except for MLJ, he was an award whore tongue). It was all about the championships.

Re: CTTF: The story of the "win button"

Reading that recruiting thread I have to say Turtle was quite right about the future of that team.

Thanks for two great seasons Marv, Swagger, Sirvini, TSB, Tmoney, Blowcaine and for one micek, HanesOnU and Orkendark. It was nice to be a part of the most successful team in CR history.

Re: CTTF: The story of the "win button"

Well, let me put it this way: We have 9 players on the team without having trained anything yet in this season. One player is a point whore, as always.

Re: CTTF: The story of the "win button"

I have a few things to say/ask:

First off, you guys have always been my favorite team, whether it is to root for or against you (more often than not tongue).  I relished every win and didn't beat myself up over losing to the team that I always considered to be the standard for Jordan.  It just won't be the same without you guys.

What was the training approach/change for season 9-10?  I'm not sure if it was something to due with the low rollback back then or something else I can't think of.

Between this thread and CSB....it really takes the thunder out of my upcoming plans to spill the beans.  I feel like the cat is really, really out of the bag on how to be a great team.

I'll be done pretty soon as well, either after this season or the next.  Let the power vacuum go into full effect.

The players will be retired, I think Matty feels the same way about Hulk.  Too much power......

CTTf will be missed around here.

Now we're all going to have to come up with new excuses for not winning championships.

I suppose a key point overall (and one that marv made several times) is that all the planning and knowledge doesn't win unless you  have great users (or lots of PCs) supporting you and following through on it.  I'm not sure if that was an issue for Shen, but I know it has been an issue for many other teams.

True that.

Yah, Hulk certainly will be retired.  No way could I give him away!

I'll be out after this or next season as well....Depends on in game and RL stuff.

iirc, it had to do with pushing for higher chems... actually let me take a look...

Yeah it looks like we decided to push for L5 chems in season 9 rather than stop at L4's. That pretty much put us ahead of most other teams in chem level for the next few seasons.

I also remember for the first few seasons we couldn't decide whether or not to rat. Since we decided to push our chem levels, we were constantly falling behind TP-wise to the other top teams. In the end, we decided to hold off until the 5th season, when full rollback kicked in. That decision would turn out to be a great one, enabling us to "destroy the world" in S14 and was still effective enough to carry over into the S16 championship run.

Re: CTTF: The story of the "win button"

All I got to say is that the HKWSC team thread was the REASON to be in the Jordan forums that first season!!!  big_smile

This goes beyond creating a power vacuum...I'm gonna quote Tofu here "There's a hole in my heart that can only be filled by CTTF!"  He said that, one time, promise!

...HKWSC may have to slip back outa retirement to run this place again, we were always just laying low and waiting for the HEAT to cool off!  I'm about to throw up my Cundiff signal.

I do want to speak to one thing here.  Marv made no reference to the fact that he recruiting  a NARC for this team.  HanesOnU was totally pulling a Donnie Brosco on us!

Swag already addressed this but here goes what I would have posted ...

I was never sure if I would ever post this but here goes ... we hit L5s in S9. Sirvini suggested we go for it on one of the first couple days of S9 and since we stopped at L3 the previous season we had the TPs to pound our mains all season to make a run at L5. This was the major motivation behind my thorough training progression monitoring. We had super dedicated users, a clear objective that fostered a competitive training race, and a method for catching training slips super fast so that I am almost 100% certain that all 10 of our queues were full from just after midnight on Day 0 to late on Day 45. If memory serves we had a complete set by 5 AM on Day 44.

With our TP goals staying about the same in S10, we coasted to L6 big_smile

Well, let me put it this way: We have 9 players on the team without having trained anything yet in this season. One player is a point whore, as always.

I bet MLJ somehow wins another award this season tongue

I think everyone except the 3P shooters got to L6

Edit: But they weren't supposed to get to L6 anyway

I'll be done pretty soon as well, either after this season or the next.  Let the power vacuum go into full effect.

The players will be retired, I think Matty feels the same way about Hulk.  Too much power......

pretty much every user on SJ will be done after this season too sad
