PC gamers - anyone out there?

Now, I don't care if you play WoW or Lemmings... no actually, I do.

I recently bought CoD:WaW... only to discover my computer doesn't meet the system requirements. Not only am I lacking RAM, but my video card is hugely outdated too. And then there's the processor!

So, firstly, I thought I'd share that little story with you all. Apparently checking system requirements didn't occur to me when buying a new game for the PC in about 3 years. Hmm.

And now, I'm left with a dilemma. How do I fix the problem at hand?

I see a few options.

1. Return CoD:WaW with an unsatisfied thirst for WWII bloodshed.
2. Upgrade my PC with the necessary equipment - a better video card, more RAM and a faster processor
3. Purchase a PC with said requisites
4. Somehow fix my brother's computer which won't stop freezing and convince him to let me use it as I please

I don't like the first option, but it may be a reality... I don't want to waste $AUD70 on a game I'll never get to play.

The next three options all depend on each other... and how much they're going to cost. My estimates tell me option 2 will cost around $1000 (casual, uninformed estimates), whereas 3 is dependent on availability in the market (I'm not going to spend $9000 on a top of the line alienware machine) and number 4 could be affected by a number of things. a) What's actually wrong with it? b) How much will that cost? c) How nice is my brother?

The answer to c) is, I'll probably have to make some sort of deal with him. Maybe if I paid to get it fixed...

Anywho, the point of this thread is to ask YOU, PC gamers... what would YOU do?

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

I would say, if you are going to buy many many other video games for the PC. You might as well get a new computer or just upgrade the processor/Video card. It all will be pricey, just determines how many games you are planning to get and such.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

If I wanted to play the game I'd buy a new computer because I hate upgrading a current machine that needs as much stuff as you listed.  I'd buy pretty much the highest I could afford so I could have it running as long as possible till I'd have to upgrade it again.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

Upgrading shouldn't cost you 1000$.  Ram is cheap, unless you go for top of the line blazing fast, and a sufficient video card for about 250$, processors are a lil more tricky, but still and all, shouldn't put you back more that 150-200$ depending on what you want.

Plus buying a new system isn't that expensive, probably 1250, for a system to play your game.

Have you ever tried www.newegg.com ? Its were I buy all my pc stuff.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

NOTE- I HAVE KNOW IDEA WHAT YOUR MOTHERBOARD IS. SO I'M GOING WITH A BLANKET SUGGESTION. YOUR MOTHERBOARD WOULD DICTATE, WHAT YOU COULD ACTUALLY USE.

Processor- Pentium 4 dual core 2.8= 88$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819116091

AGP -Video Card - Radeon X1650PRO 512MB= 85$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814161032
or
PCI - Video Card - Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 = 99$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814161272

Memory - (complete crapshoot) CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 = 47$ before a 10$ rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145043

That's about 250$ with shipping.

NOW IF ONLY I HAD THE MOTHERBOARD, I COULD GET  EXACT, but it doesn't cost a grand to upgrade.

This is the type of stuff I like to hear.

If this helps, this is what I could gather from the system information tab - AMD Semprom Processor 3200+ 1.79Ghz, 448mb of RAM, Physical Address Extension.

I don't know if that helps you or not, though.

I played CoD: WaW for about a week then I got bored. XD

The setup above is really good but it really depends on your motherboard.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

I have a computer that can run Doom 3 quite smoothly on high settings for $640 (before rebates were applied, even!). It's got a 512MB video card, 3.0Ghz CPU, 4GB RAM, 750W power supply, a sweet tower (here it is!), motherboard (DDR2 800 memory standard, 4 expansion slots, 8GB max. memory, 4 SATA 3Gb/s, so on and so forth) and a 1TB hard drive (that's a LOT LOT LOT more than most people need unless you have like 500 movies on your computer - heck, you could cut this out if you wanted to keep your old hard drive). It's excessive as far as the minimum requirements are concerned, but it definitely does not cost $1,000 to get a new computer ($USA 640 is about $AUD 800), but again, what I've got is relatively excessive as far as that game is concerned.

As far as Doom 3 or Call of Duty is concerned?

I might check out this website, then. And to answer the other question in this thread that I remember, I'd like to have a fair few more big games running at once - Sims 3, maybe... some of my oldies like Hidden and Dangerous 2 and yeah, basically, if I had the hardware I'd be buying the software, so to speak. In this case software being games.

You're getting raped on the RAM. You can get 4 Gigs for 50.

Check slickdeals.net

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

Yeah but that's Corsair Dominator RAM.  50$ for 2 gigs of that is gooooood, in my opinion. (but I have no idea what speed RAM his motherboard will take)

edit- Also unless hes run Vista 32, he can't use more than 2 gigs anyway, so its overkill.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

Not a bad new PC for 599$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6883107853

edit- I really liked this review by a 3 out of 5 star reviewer. Basically what I was looking for.

"   I had been looking for a replacement for my self-built machine for months and ended up buying this. Computer-wise, the problem was I could have either bought a loaded Hyundai or a bare-bones Lexus. This machine is definitely the loaded Hyundai of computers. I couldn't install a single upgrade from my previous computer because of power issues and the I/O devices wreak of 'cheap' (for a minute I contemplated taking the mobo and processor out and putting it into my old case but decided against it).
Although this machine is not very scalable I do believe it will last me a few years and will be able to take a Windows 7 upgrade this fall with no issues. This should be the machine you get to get your kids or yourself through school."

Dude.... that's pretty much exactly what I would have posted, right down to the newegg link big_smile

I recently built myself a system that was pretty much just-below-top-of-the-line standards at the time (July '08) and it didn't cost me much more than $1000 iirc, which includes a 22-in widescreen monitor, although I reused my hard drives, dvd-r drive, and mouse/keyboard. If all you're doing is upgrading a few components, it should cost you less, and yes, newegg.com is your friend. The most important thing is to know what motherboard you have. If you do choose to replace it, you may need to buy a new copy of Windows

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

If all you want is WWII awesomeness, return WaW and download - for free - Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's a fantastic game that was meant to be an expansion pack to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but the single player was scrapped and the multiplayer released for free.

If you want to play other, new games, I suggest you upgrade. It costs quite a bit less than most people think.

Yeah the issue with this is, if he bought a gateway, dell, hp or something that came prefab, the copy of windows stays with the motherboard. If it was a built rig, you can install it on another motherboard, it all depends on what type of copy of windows it is. Thank Maximum PC for that answer, I read it regularly.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

If you are going for RAM and stuff, it may be worthwhile to find a cheaper computer with all the specs and buy that.  I'd recommend an HP, as I like mine. smile  And they are affordable.

WFUdina is on the money with all of his suggestions thus far.  You should be able to upgrade enough to be able to run the game decently for $200 US, so slightly more for you....

This, it shouldn't cost any where near 1000 dollars to upgrade a PC unless your going SLI with the newest cards and for that game and most games that are out right now you wouldn't need to do that.

Re: PC gamers - anyone out there?

I like what i'm hearing. Is newegg.com the only place i'm going to find these prices? And if so, what are some people's experiences with shipping? Also, i'm still considering fixing my brother's computer, since it already has all the specs i need. If i knew what was wrong with it, i'd be able to make that decision easier. While i'm at it, does anyone have any troubleshooting tips for my brother's computer? It starts up and runs fine for as much as ten minutes before freezing entirely.
